From April 22 to October 23, 2022, the Cast Collection of Ancient Sculptures in Charlottenburg presented an exhibition on the plaster cast of the Sleeping Ariadne, which illustrates the complex history of ancient sculptures over the centuries.

The Digital Network for Collections team helped the Cast Collection to develop a digital version of the exhibition. Both the physical exhibition and the online presentation were created as part of the Cast Collection’s teaching program. Students from the Institute of Classical Archaeology at the FU Berlin were closely involved in the conceptualization and implementation of both the physical and digital exhibition formats.

Using the Digital Network for Collections’ tools, the seminar participants were able to implement this ambitious digital project without having to first set up the necessary infrastructure, such as a content management system and front end. This allowed the seminar to focus on questions such as: How can archaeological content be conveyed to a broad audience in an appropriate and appealing way using digital media? What is the relationship between handling physical, three-dimensional objects in the Cast Collection’s actual space and arranging images, videos, and texts in a digital display?

Lorenz Winkler-Horaček, the curator of the Cast Collection, reports on the collaboration on the online exhibition in a post on our weblog.
